Many people live by the saying “I’ll just sleep when I’m dead” and while that may be said lightheartedly, the grim reality is that a lack of sleep can seriously affect your health. Sleep offers the body the opportunity to repair damaged tissue, produce essential hormones, and it improves memory. These are just a few of the basic benefits of sleep.

Studies show that people who sleep less than six hours a night, or those who consistently do not get enough deep sleep, are both at a higher risk of having heart attack and stroke. Sleep apnea is another major ailment. Sleep apnea has a similar effect of being choked – but while deep asleep at night. This results in the heart rate going up and then raising the body’s blood pressure. Some experts suggest that sleep apnea could be responsible for one-third of all cases of high blood pressure in adults.

Another important risk related to a lack of sleep is the risk of excessive weight gain. While studies are not quite sure whether or not a lack of sleep is the cause or effect of weight gain, there is enough evidence to suggest a strong link. One fact is that being deprived of sleep leads to an insensitivity to insulin, which is essential for a healthy metabolism. Sleep deprivation also causes hunger hormones to increase thereby resulting in eating more simply due to hunger.

When a lack of sleep can lead to excessive weight gain, heart attacks, and stroke, it makes sense then to put more effort in getting more sleep and giving our bodies what they need.

If you just found out you are pregnant you may be wondering how to take care of yourself and your unborn baby nutritionally. There are a lot of misconceptions out there of what and how a pregnant woman should eat. Many women are worried about the extra weight gain that comes with pregnancy and becoming overweight. But, the fact is, you can remain a healthy weight and have a healthy pregnancy at the same time.

The first thing you should know is that most experts say that during the first trimester (the first three months) that you only need an extra 100 calories. After all, the fetus really does not require much more than that to support its healthy development. For the second and third trimesters, you only need 200-300 extra calories. Many people are still under the impression that they should be eating much more than that because they are “eating for two”. This thinking is unhealthy and is what leads to extra and unnecessary weight gain.

A fetus does not require a huge amount of calories to develop healthily and that’s why you do not need more than the extra 300 calories during your pregnancy. These extra calories not only offer nutrition for your unborn baby but some of it is also stored as fat in you. This is your body’s way of sort of insuring you maintain a healthy pregnancy and ability to care for your baby. This extra fat is there to ensure a healthy pregnancy but will easily be shed after giving birth.

Another important habit to develop during pregnancy is to eat a varied and healthy diet. Every bite you take counts now. Think about how you would feed a baby. Would you feed your baby a bag of chips and ice cream? Probably not. That is why you have to make sure you make good choices when it comes to food during your pregnancy. If you feel like you’re not able to vary your diet enough, you can take a maternity vitamin, which should be able to help compensate any shortcomings in your diet.

Who doesn’t love the convenience of fast food or being served a delicious meal at a nice restaurant? At the same time, we are all trying to approach food with a more health-conscious mindset and make healthier, low-fat choices. For many, this simply means rarely eating out. This doesn’t have to be the case though.

Several healthy fast food joints have sprouted all across America. Panera Bread, Chipotle, and Jason’s Deli are just a few to name. These are the same concept as traditional fast food restaurants; food served fast and affordable.

At the same time, a number of popular fast food restaurants now offer healthy alternatives. MacDonald’s now offers several grilled chicken options (both in salads and sandwiches). You can also order a healthy Fruit and Yogurt Parfait. Burger King also offers a grilled chicken sandwich and, additionally, offers a “BK Veggie Burger”. Places like Taco Bell, Subway, Arby’s and KFC are fast food favorites and are also offering more low-calorie options that still taste great and can be enjoyed by anyone.

When eating out you don’t have to resort to eating salads. There are also other great ways to keep your weight under control and enjoy meals at restaurants. You can share a large portion with whoever is eating out with you. Many restaurants offer their meals in smaller portions or half sized portions actually. You can also ask for some dishes to be grilled instead of fried, in some cases. To double check, call the restaurant ahead of time or check online to see what kind of options they have that might accommodate you best.

You can still enjoy eating out and losing weight or simply maintaining your figure without having to steer clear of fast food restaurants altogether.
