Hoodia Gordonii is similar to a cactus plant that grows on the semi-desserts of Namibia, Angola, Botswana and South Africa. Recently, it has been marketed heavily as weight loss product and has become very popular. After the banning herb ephedra, the industry has been looking for the next new effective diet pill.
Hoodia gordonii can be seen in the clusters of green upright sterns. Even though it is most of the time called a cactus since it looks the same, a hoodia is basically a juicy plant. Usually it takes 5 years before hoodia gordoniis pale purple flowers to show up and Hoodia can be harvested. You can find thirteen types of hoodia. Steroidal glycoside is the active ingredient identified that is known as p57. At present hoodia gordonii is the only source identified to have p57.
Hoodia gordonii is used to suppress appetite in 1937 by a Dutch anthropologist doing some research in San Busmen. Then in 1963 scientist at Council for Scientific and Industrial Research are now starting to focus on hoodia. They have found out that animals lose weight after they used hoodia.
A British company Phytopharm was the first company who got the patent in 1995 to use p57. They have spent over $20 million on studying the plant hoodia. Then Phytopharm sub-licensed its rights in 1998 with Pfizer to develop p57. At present, Pfizer returned the rights to Phytopharm and is now working with Unilever.
There are no significant study that shows hoodia is dangerous to everyone one should remain careful on using it. This product is not advisable for those who are suffering from anorexia nervosa and those who are underweight. There are also some who might be allergic on Hoodia so it is best to take precaution on taking this product.
Hoodia Gordonii is sold in capsule, tea or liquid form in health food stores and online. Those prescription drugs that contain its P57 derivatives may take up to three more years before it will reach the market. Only natural hoodia supplements are available in the market.
